Giraffe Encounter

The Zoo’s latest exhibit, Giraffe Encounter lets you experience these tall wonders from a high-up viewing deck. For $3 you can get up on the Tall Wonders Viewing Deck, get up close and feed the giraffes elm their favorite food - and acacia tree branches. They may lick, but they don’t bite!

Animal Exhibits

The Sacramento Zoo is home to over 500 amazing animals from around the world, including tigers, lions, jaguars, zebras, red pandas, giraffes, chimpanzees, and crocodiles, as well as 9,000 species of birds. Learn about the animals on the Cell-Phone Safari Tour, see wildlife art on the Sacramento Zoo Art Tour, or hop on the Sacramento Zoo Train.

  • When is the best time to go to the Zoo?

If you want to avoid the crowds, go on weekdays. The best times to visit the Zoo are Monday, Saturday and Sunday mornings, or weekdays after 1 pm. The animals are more exciting in the morning since they spend hotter afternoons sleeping. Warm days in March and October are wonderful and not so crowded with groups and school trips.
  • Is there food or dining?

The Sacramento Zoo offers fun places to eat lunch or snack. The Kampala Café serves sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, salads, ice cream, kid’s meals, and chef specials and offers indoor and outdoor dining. Stop by Savannah Snacks across from the Tall Wonders giraffe exhibit for an ice cream cone, beverage, or churro while watching the giraffes roam. Pick up gifts, souvenirs, and essentials like batteries and sunscreen at the Zoofari Market Gift Store.
