The California State Railroad Museum is a dynamic attraction with exciting exhibits, activities and events that celebrate the history and magic of railroading. With over 225,000 square feet of space, the California State Railroad Museum complex features stimulating exhibits and beautifully restored locomotives and railroad cars that illustrate California's fascinating railroad history and the culture that shaped the West. See a Pullman-style sleeping car, step aboard a Railway Post Office and enjoy excursion rides on the Sacramento Southern Railroad.

Exhibits Old & New

The California State Railroad Museum features beautifully restored locomotives and railroad cars that bring the history of railroading to life. The museum also offers changing exhibits that highlight railroading in the West. See the new exhibits, “Double Exposure: Photography and the Transcontinental Railroad" and the return of the heavy duty 80-foot turntable at the west end of the Museum. Explore the collection of steam, combustion and early gasoline-fueled locomotives, as well as vintage coach and dining cars.

Authentic Train Rides

Enjoy fun excursion rides on the Sacramento Southern Railroad, including coach cars, open-air gondolas and an observation car pulled by vintage diesel locomotives from the museum collection. Hop aboard El Dorado, an elegant 1920s Southern Pacific observation lounge car, and enjoy a scenic, 45-minute ride with refreshments. Sit back in luxury or step out on the observation platform for stellar views of the Sacramento River.


  • Are tours offered?

    Yes. Guided tours and interpretive film screenings are offered daily at the museum and at the many historical attractions within Old Sacramento State Historic Park. Photography is allowed!
  • What are some museum favorites?

    Check out the Museum’s vintage locomotive collection and rolling stock exhibits. See these meticulously restored trains and cars that traversed California and the West in the mid-1800s. Fan favorites are the Central Pacific Railroad No. 1 Gov. Stanford, Southern Pacific Railroad No. 1 C.P. Huntington, and the Virginia & Truckee Railroad No. 12 Genoa.
